My Thoughts:
With Tiffany Reisz’s latest installment in The Original Sinners series, The Angel, my favorite provocative protagonist is back! The Angel begins with notorious, erotic fiction author Nora Sutherlin once again in the arms and collar of Søren, her on and off longtime love. Since Nora is back with Søren, this also means she is back to being his submissive. — Oh wait! Did I mention Tiffany Reisz writes Erotic Fiction? No? The Original Sinners series is Erotic Fiction that follows the exploits of Nora Sutherland. — Now back to Søren! I should probably also mention that Søren is a Catholic priest and in addition to being involved with Nora he is also head dom at the exclusive BDSM club his friend Kingsley owns. So, when Søren is up for the position of Bishop in his diocese and a reporter starts investigating his background, he sends Nora and Michael (a seventeen-year-old old parishioner and budding submissive who attempted suicide in the church previously and whom Søren has taken under his wing in a variety of controversial ways) away to upstate New York for the summer. Søren sends them away together for a couple of reasons: 1. Søren wants Nora to train Michael in the ways of BDSM so that Michael does not harm himself. 2. He doesn’t want Nora or Michael to feel obligated to lie about him to the reporter.
Michael is the angel the title of the book refers to. This book is just as much about Michael as it is about Nora, and Reisz writes both characters beautifully. Reisz takes an extremely controversial scenario, an older woman training a seventeen-year-old to be a submissive, and walks the thin line between what is considered acceptable and unacceptable by society in general without missing a step. (Also, I want to point out that seventeen is the legal age of consent in the locales where the book takes place.)
While staying with Nora’s friend (and ex-lover) Griffin, Michael begins falling for Griffin. I loved the Griffin/Michael storyline, and I was rooting for them to find love together all the way to the end of the book. As much as I love Kingsley Edge, the mysterious BDSM club owner with a Rolls Royce who pops up in this book just enough to pique readers’ curiosity, I found myself taking a liking to ex-party boy Griffin. He is hottt! With a penchant for wearing kilts (this harkens back to my Axyl Rose fetish) and band tattoos on his muscular biceps, Griffin is serious eye candy or book candy. I don’t really know what the proper terminology is here, but let’s just say, “Mama like”!
With the reporter storyline, Reisz brings an element of suspense to the series that I loved. Will the reporter find out about Søren’s decidedly unpriest-like activities? Will the reporter and Søren hook up? Will the reporter come to terms with why she doesn’t like the Catholic church? The Angel shows a completely different side of Søren. After reading The Siren, I was pretty anti- Søren. I didn’t like the hold he had over Nora, but after reading The Angel I have a better understanding of their bond. I’m slowly warming up to Søren.
I enjoy the way Reisz toys with her readers. Just when readers think they’ve got a character figured out, she pulls the literary rug out from under them with a delicious plot twist. For example, at the end of The Siren I feared Wesley (Nora’s college-age intern and confidant who Nora had feelings for) would not make an appearance in The Angel, but thankfully he did play a part in The Angel.
If you are looking for Erotic Fiction with a literary touch, Reisz is the author for you. Nora is not only sexy and adventurous but she is also smart with a biting wit…and whip. The Original Sinners is the most exciting and original Erotic Fiction series out there, and I cannot wait for book three in the series, The Prince, to come out!
