Summary:

When Shar tries on a Tiffany’s diamond ring from Hades, the annoyingly hot Lord of the Underworld, it activates an obscure contractual clause that puts Shar and former-frenemy-turned-friend Meg in Hades’ service once more. Shar is whisked away to prepare a ball, while Meg is sent to help a spoiled rich girl. Just when it appears the girls will be doomed to serve Hades for eternity, two gorgeous demigods show up. But can the girls finally ditch Hades forever? (Summary provided by Flux.)

My Thoughts:

Sirenz Back In Fashion by Charlotte Bennardo and Natalie Zaman is everything a reader could hope for in a sequel. It keeps the same witty tone and underlying theme of friendship of the previous book throughout while providing readers with a fresh and exciting adventure for readers of the first book to devour. Sirenz Back In Fashion once again follows Meg and Shar as they accidentally fall into another contract with the devilishly handsome Hades. This time there is a twist: Meg and Shar are separated and Meg must complete the mission while Shar is trapped in Tartarus, the scary and glamorous underworld Hades reigns over.

One of my favorite features of the Sirenz series is that each book explores Meg and Shar’s friendship. Sirenz Back in Fashion has Meg and Shar separated for most of the book. This gives them each a chance to reflect on what they mean to each other as they struggle to find a way out of Hades’s agreement. It’s refreshing as a reader to find YA that reminds teen readers that while romances come and go during the high school years, friendships can remain solid. (This is funny coming from me. I married a a boy I met my senior year of high school and lived “happily ever after”! However, I always valued my friendships and kept my friends in the loop despite having a serious relationship as a teen.)

Not that there isn’t plenty of romance in Sirenz Back In Fashion. This time around Meg has a boyfriend, Jeremy. Things with Jeremy become complicated. She can’t tell him about her assignment from Hades, and she wants to keep him away from her new roommate Paulina. Paulina is part of her assignment from Hades, so if she explains Paulina to Jeremy, she breaks the contract with Hades. This complication leads to lots of relationship drama for Meg, and was  exciting to read. I felt so sorry for poor Meg! Shar also has a romantic interest this time around, Caz. I love Caz! He is trapped in Tartarus with Shar and is trying to help her find a way out. Caz is sweet, adorable and just the kind of romantic interest I hoped Shar would finally get. Despite a romance blooming with Caz, Shar has to deal with Hades’s advances at every corner. Hades is “haute” as ever. Caz and Jeremy are sweet, but I am Team Hades! It helps that the authors want Ian Somerhalder to play him in the movie version. So,  I’m sure I will continue to be Team Hades as the series goes on.

Glamorous fashion and exotic settings provide a luscious, ever present background for the characters in Sirenz Back In Fashion. From a pair of vintage Vivienne Westwood shoes at the beginning of the book to a Las Vegas style casino that could only found in the underworld, there is no shortage of exciting clothing and locales for readers to enjoy. Bennardo and Zaman are masters at providing readers with plenty of exciting eye candy!

I highly recommend this book to parents, because it contains no cursing. It is a book you can give to your tween or teen without content worries. It is also a great supplement for students studying mythology. Simply put, Sirenz Back In Fashion is a “gift from the gods” for adult and teen readers to enjoy.
