Love At First Bark by Julie KlamI love dogs. Yep, I’m one of those dog people. I have two dogs, Miss Piggy and Margie. I like to call them my first children and I tend to get a few raised eyebrow looks when I admit to my friends that they sleep in the bed with my husband and me. So, I’m pretty sure I’m the target audience for Julie Klam’s latest memoir Love At First Bark (Riverhead Books, Hardcover $22.95, eBook $10.99).

At 192 pages, Love At First Bark is a fairly short read. Because of the short length, I think it is the perfect choice for book clubs looking for a humorous, heartwarming memoir.

Love At First Bark is split into three sections. Each section deals with a dog that Klam either rescued or fostered.  My favorite section of the book entailed the trials and tribulations of fostering a terrier named Clementine who had fecal incontinence and slept with a small stuffed Boston Terrier. Throughout this section of the book I fell in love with Clementine or “Clemmie” as JulieKlam called her. Another highlight is a passage in the third section of the book when Klam describes how she and  her husband Paul helped with a dog rescue in New Orleans. The events of this rescue (as depicted in the book trailer below) are both hilarious and poignant. Love At First Bark is the work of an activist and humorist at the top of her game.
