Summary:
Becoming Marie Antoinette is an enthralling confection of a novel, the first in a new trilogy that follows the transformation of a coddled Austrian archduchess into the reckless, powerful, beautiful queen Marie Antoinette.
Raised alongside her numerous brothers and sisters by the formidable empress of Austria, ten-year-old Maria Antonia knew that her idyllic existence would one day be sacrificed to her mother’s political ambitions. What she never anticipated was that the day in question would come so soon…. (Summary provided by Ballantine Books.)
My Thoughts:
On August 9th Ballantine Books will release Becoming Marie Antoinette by Juliet Grey, and I couldn’t possibly be more excited! From the second I glimpsed the beautiful cover, I have been dying to read it. So, now that I’ve read the book did it live up to my expectations? Absolutely! It is the first novel in a new historical fiction trilogy that chronicles Marie Antoinette from her girlhood in Austria to her days as queen. Juliet Grey’s writing is exquisitely detailed and I enjoyed her lush descriptions of the clothing and decor of the time period. Grey possesses the rare ability to transport readers to a past only accessible by imagination. Becoming Marie Antoinette is sure to appeal to lovers of quality historical fiction as well as those who are simply fascinated by Marie Antoinette.

This appeals to me because I know almost nothing about Marie Antoinette.
This time period both fascinates and horrifies me – things were, as Dickens says, the best of times and the worst of times.
I’m so glad you enjoyed this one! Thanks for being a part of the tour.
